Bujold, Lois McMaster. Cryoburn. Baen Books, 2010.
A fiction book about a boy who discovers the Cryocombs, where there are people frozen to sleep. He finds an eleven year old boy who shows him a place where the outcasts of the society live and he finds some secrets of the cryogenics going on. I think this will be helpful when thinking about certain possibilities of what my future government might be doing.
Simak, Clifford D. Why Call Them Back from Heaven? Gateway, 2011.
This book is also in a utopian/dystopian future where people are afraid to take chances that are too risky and save for a chance at a second life due to cryogenics. It talks about a man who is convicted of a crime and now has his chance for this second life taken from him. It would be interesting to maybe think about the nicer side of my dystopia where cryogenics might be a good thing, but some people might not have access to it.
White, James. The Dream Millenium. BALLANTINE, 1974.
A book set in the future where people are starting to colonize other planets and species who live in those planets. The main character is a medical doctor who is on one of these “sleeper ships” used to colonize the planets. The books goes into dept about what he dreams about when he is in hibernation during the long space travels. So it would be nice to show what the people falling asleep might be dreaming about or what happens while they are dying.
Woodruff, Bob, et al. “Former Alcor Employee Makes Harsh Allegations Against Cryonics Foundation.” ABC News, ABC News Network, 7 Oct. 2009, abcnews.go.com/Nightline/alcor-employee-makes-harsh-allegations-cryonics-foundation/story?id=8764331.
This talks about a real life company that participates and freezes people in order for them to be revived in a future where the dead are able to be revived. It has the experiences of a former employee and some disturbing things that happen to the “patients”. I think it would be a nice place to build off from, especially because cryosleep isn’t something that is fake but happening right now.
